Lead survey: check old paints before building work

Old paints may contain lead, sometimes at high concentrations. Deterioration and building work can produce lead-containing dust or flakes. Ingestion or inhalation particularly exposes children.

A lead survey identifies which surfaces contain lead before work begins, allowing appropriate working methods and correct waste disposal.

Describe my project
01

Where is lead found in buildings?

In Switzerland, white lead was progressively banned in paints (from 1926 for some uses, completely in 2005), while red lead and lead chromate were banned in 2005. Paints applied before these dates may therefore contain it.

02

When is a survey useful?

  • before sanding, scraping, blasting or stripping old painted surfaces;
  • before demolition or conversion, for waste disposal planning;
  • where paint is flaking in a home with young children.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sand old paint myself? It is better not to until you know whether it contains lead. Authorities recommend entrusting this work to properly equipped professionals.

Is lead dangerous if I leave everything untouched? Dust and flakes are exposure pathways. The paint’s condition and room use must be considered when assessing the situation.
