PAH survey: identify tar in older materials
PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are substances found particularly in coal tar. Coal tar was used for decades in certain construction products: waterproofing, coverings and adhesives. Some PAHs are carcinogenic.
Not all black or bituminous products contain tar: petroleum bitumen generally contains far fewer PAHs than coal tar. Only analysis can distinguish them. Before building work, a PAH survey identifies which materials contain PAHs and how to dispose of them.
From suspicion to results
A material’s appearance may raise suspicion but cannot establish a conclusion. We take representative samples for laboratory analysis. The result states the PAH content, which determines how the waste must be treated and disposed of.
