PCB survey: identify affected sealants and materials
PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are chemicals formerly used to make certain products flexible or fire-resistant. In buildings, they are mainly found in joint sealants installed between around 1955 and 1975. They persist in the environment and can gradually enter indoor air.
Before renovation or demolition, it is necessary to know whether sealants and other materials contain PCBs, as their removal and disposal are subject to specific rules.
Which materials may contain PCBs?
- expansion and façade joint sealants, particularly in large concrete buildings;
- seals around windows and doors;
- certain anti-corrosion or waterproofing paints;
- old capacitors and transformers.
After the result
If PCBs exceed the applicable thresholds, the materials must be removed by a specialist contractor using protective measures, then disposed of under the rules in force. The report provides the information needed for the waste disposal plan and tenders.
